97-year veteran gave space blessing to Kazakhstan


On the eve of Victory Day, representatives of the Republican Center for Space Communications (RCSC) visited the home of war veteran Kurmantay Aitzhanova, reports the correspondent of the MIA «Kazinform».

The 97-year-old aksakal received guests on that day - schoolchildren who read his poems congratulated the veteran, Khabar TV channel filmed an interview with Kurmantai ata, and the employees of RCSC JSC handed him a new digital hearing aid.

Kurmantay Aitzhanov is from Korgalzhyn district of Akmola region. «I matured early. I was only 10 years old, but I remember very clearly the time of the famine; I especially remember my father, who worked day and night to save his family from starvation. I think I was a good helper to him», - recalls Kurmantai ata.

When the war began, the young man was 19 years old, and when he was drafted into the army in 1942, he immediately went to the front. Four months of training in the 8th Cavalry Guard, then combat training in the division of snipers in Bashkiria. Participation in hostilities began with besieged Leningrad. «For six months of fierce fighting to protect Leningrad, we were under siege for 90 days and received only dry bread, which our pilots dropped from our planes,» the veteran says.


The front line of the Kazakh fighter Aitzhanov was victorious. After the Leningrad battle, he joined the Army of Marshal Zhukov and walked along the roads of war through Belarus, Ukraine, Poland, Romania, having finished off the enemy on the Elbe River.

Kurmantai Ata prepared shells for the famous «Katyusha». The warrior reached Berlin and witnessed and participated in the capture of the Reichstag.

After the end of the war, Kurmantay Aitzhanov was still a year away from the defense of Berlin and returned home only in 1946.

The veteran showed us his numerous military and labor awards, among which the Marshal Zhukov’s medal is especially dear to him. Two orders of Glory, certificates of which are stored, lost in battle.

After the war, Aitzhanov continued his career on the railway. In 1949, he met his future spouse Batish Sadyk Kyzy, with whom they created a large and friendly family. Five children, 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren are proud of the glorious history of the father and grandfather of the front-line soldier.

War veteran Kurmantay Aitzhanov lost his wife in 2003 and has been living in a one-room apartment with a granddaughter from the state for 7 years. «I dream to live to be a hundred years old and beautifully leave, I am satisfied with my life», - says the aksakal.

To the question of how he managed at 97 years old, having passed through such severe trials of life, to remain vigorous, the positive replies: «Do not be lazy, you must be obligatory in your words and deeds, and in no case be carried away by alcohol».

Aksakal gave his guests farewell. His blessing touched everyone: young people, mature politicians and even the Head of State. He did not forget to thank the representatives of Kazkosmos for the care and attention to his health, wishing that the Kazakhstan flag was hoisted on Mars. «Then the apple trees will bloom there too!», - said Kurmantai ata.
